Major Roadlab Eastern Cape Projects

ON-SITE AND LABORATORY TESTING

Major Roadlab Eastern Cape Projects

Our commercial branches in East London, Mthatha and Komani (formally Queenstown) serve construction partners across the Eastern Cape with daily quality assurance testing, enabling the building of civil projects such as housing developments, industrial zones, major roads, shopping centres, bridges, reservoirs and more.

Alongside our commercial branches, our dedicated project laboratories are supporting the province’s most significant projects, including the 400 hectare Industrial Development Zone and multi-year upgrades to the N2.

In July 2024 SANRAL announced the opening of the N2 Belstone Interchange and route MR0688 linking Bhisho to Zwelitsha, a 33-month project that Roadlab supported to address high accident rates and the traffic congestion.

Our major projects in the Eastern Cape show our impact in the region.

As Roadlab continues to lead quality assurance efforts in the Eastern Cape, three standout projects illustrate our commitment to excellence and local impact.

Each of these projects presents unique challenges, from soil analysis and material testing to precise data validation, highlighting our technical expertise and dedication to infrastructure resilience.

Through these projects, Roadlab demonstrates how quality assurance practices adapt and excel in diverse scenarios, driving progress and reliability in Eastern Cape civil construction.

Upgrade of the R336 Route between Kirkwood and Addo

The R336 upgrade is a significant infrastructure improvement connecting the agricultural hubs of Kirkwood and Addo.

This route is vital for the transportation of goods, particularly from local citrus farms, boosting regional commerce and supporting economic growth.

Roadlab’s quality assurance role ensures that materials meet high standards for durability and safety, critical for a route that will experience heavy truck and commuter traffic.

Key tests conducted include sampling, slump testing, making and curing of concrete cubes, and compressive strength assessments for the structures, which include 3 bridges along the route.

Additionally, durability panels were tested for sorptivity, chloride conductivity, and oxygen permeability to ensure the longevity and strength of the construction materials.

Upgrade of the N2 from Green River to Buffalo River

The N2 upgrade between Green River and Buffalo River enhances one of South Africa's key national roads, connecting major Eastern Cape cities and rural communities.

This project is designed to improve road conditions, reduce travel times, and increase road safety for residents and transport operators.

Roadlab provides comprehensive testing services to confirm that materials and construction methods meet the demands of this high-traffic corridor, including a range of onsite material testing such as nuclear densities and Dynamic Cone Penetrometers (DCP's) as well as laboratory testing of soil and asphalt samples collected on site.

East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ)

Spanning 400 hectares in the Eastern Cape, The East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ) serves as a hub for economic growth and manufacturing excellence.

As a key infrastructure development, the zone supports industries ranging from automotive manufacturing to renewable energy, fostering job creation and investment in the region.

Roadlab plays a critical role in ensuring the integrity of construction materials and site preparation through extensive quality assurance testing, helping create a reliable foundation for industrial expansion, contributing to the success and sustainability of this transformative initiative.

Motherwell Passenger Rail Corridor (MPRC)

Designed by GIBB Engineering and Architecture, the Motherwell Passenger Rail Corridor (MPRC) aims to enhance public transport access for Port Elizabeth residents, particularly those commuting to and from the Motherwell township.

The project is a transformative step for the region, intended to improve access to economic opportunities through efficient rail service Roadlab’s quality assurance work ensures that all construction materials and processes align with stringent safety and performance standards, contributing to a rail system that will serve as a dependable, long-term asset for Eastern Cape communities.
